All the news that’s fit to know…

In a bold move, CNN pulled television coverage for Sarah Palin’s high-ranking-official-foreign-policy meetings when the press pool was told there would not be any wire or print reporters allowed. The article from Yahoo news (not the greatest source, but the original bud of information…) states:

“CNN, which was providing the television coverage for news organizations, decided to pull its TV crew, effectively denying Palin the high visibility she had sought…
“Those sessions and meetings scheduled for Wednesday are part of the Republican campaign’s effort to give Palin experience in foreign affairs. She has never met a foreign head of state and first traveled outside North America just last year.
“The campaign told the TV producer, print and wire reporters in the press pool that follows the Alaska governor that they would not be admitted with the photographers and camera crew taken in to photograph the meetings. At least two news organizations, including The Associated Press, objected and were told that the decision was not subject to discussion.”

It’s the simple case of the marriage of politics and popular media. It happened at the onset of the “War on Terror” (I wrote a tirade for my Eng 102 thesis paper…) and it’s happening in Galveston, where reporters are banned from flying over the area to show the mass destruction that happened there during Ike.

We fight for our freedom of speech because our forefathers gave us this in the first amendment of our Constitution, yet we are fed misinformation… how free is speech really, when what we’re told still isn’t the entire truth.

You think about the situation in Iran, where Mahmoud Ahmadinejad asked for televised debates between himself and presidential candidates. Now, you’ve got thousands of Americans (if that – you must consider the vast majority of Americans probably have no clue Ahmadinejad even challenged the candidates) who think the leader of Iran is calling out our candidates. How many people know that Ahmadinejad is simply a figurehead and their supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, is actually running the show?

It’s like America prides itself on being misinformed – but how can we not be misinformed when we are fed half the story, and the rest is kept secret like an older brother’s stash of dirty magazines?

And on that thought, just how bad is it? Are there tent cities cropping up around your metropolis? Are people moving in, to find there are no jobs? We haven’t instituted breadlines and rations …. Yet. Is our food stamp system not a highly updated breadline? And haven’t there been heavy draws on that system?

We’ve not reached the dustbowl, yet. Here in the PacNW, we’re safer – with our technological quickness, we’re in a tiny bubble. Who knows how long it’ll last.

On a lighter subject -

“Around her, colored leaves float like butterflies….”

Yesterday was the start of Fall.

This means cute hats, fun scarves… the perfect blazer and fingerless mittens. It means tights and schoolbooks and backpacks. Maybe it’s the fact that school starts today (well, yesterday was the official start, but my first real class is today) or that I crocheted cute berets this last weekend or maybe it’s just that all my favorite outfits are composed of fall-rtw. I’m definitely not looking forward to rain, but I am envisioning the perfect rain-trench… with a hood and a belt and everything. I can’t believe student’s aren’t more stoked for back to school – it’s a reason to cure sartorial malaise with the idea of uniforms paired with cute bookbags….

The Deco-Modiste Etsy shop is up and looking good. We’ve only got a few items posted there, so far, but I’ve fixed the descriptions and edited the photos and I’m very stoked for the quality of the postings. I need to get the rest of the photos fixed and added to the site, with descriptions.

Check us out, here: http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=6058389

I’ve also been making peacock-inspired earrings. I’m working on a couple pendant necklaces and a few other earring designs. I plan on making little crocheted beanies, short armwarmers (sleeve extensions?) and a few crochet bags. We’re going to do scarves for the winter season, as well. I’m excited for crafty missions, and doubly stoked for those crafty missions to make a little extra cash.

In addition to all this fun, my first chemistry class is today. I picked up my accounting book from the school last Friday and realized that the change of pace is much-welcomed. I’m glad I’ll be on the Hill, in a woosh of bustling activity, seeing and learning new things and meeting new people!
