Divided?

When we were little, we came forth from our parents into a world where all children were the same – at least, my generation has. We came into a world where no matter who you were, you still had to stand in the same lines, you received the same treatment over the sharing of toys. You had access to the same band-aids and unless you were allergic to peanut butter, or something, you had the same snacks at snack-time.

As we became older, we were given appropriate toys by grandmothers, aunts and parents. Some little girls still liked dump trucks to haul their dollies around in. Some little boys thought dressing up was funny because you could be a superhero if you wore your mother’s wrap skirt like a cape. Girls took chemistry classes because they liked mixing compounds together. Boys took home-ec because they had an affinity for cooking up delicious food.

Now, I see women in bookkeeping and men behind large machines. From my news sources, I hear women like Sarah Palin denying us a freedom to choose not to bear children when our economic situations would not allow, and telling us we have to pay to prove we were victims of violent crimes. I hear men like Dino Rossi telling us it’s too bad we want effective forms of birth control because he doesn’t want that on his conscience and telling us it’s too bad that rubber broke because you may not be able to fill your medical practitioner’s given prescription for an emergency contraceptive.

“Maybe you should have kept your legs closed?”

While you can’t get that prescription filled (and by the way, it’s not covered by your insurance either), men with hair loss and erectile dysfunction are waved through that insurance giant with the red rubber “APPROVED” stamp. You can bet they’ll keep receiving those insurance-funded prescriptions, while you’re haggling with your pharmacist about his or her “moral conscience”. Who decides what’s moral? Some of these high-office holders are trying to do that for you.

Every time you vote for one of these people, your rights to choose how to live your life diminish. Every time you don’t vote, you lose the right to say that you fought for your own interests.

Make informed decisions. Vote on those principles you hold dear.
