So I started thinking -

Filed in Fashion and Style Tags: , , , , ,

I went out with the cutest chic last night and roamed the Village till way past dark. We were walking around, and I noticed all the girls there look mildly similar. I thought to myself – so cookie cutter.

Today I browsed a website that I browse a lot, and I started noticing all the response to the posts – all these people saying “I want to be like this too!” and I’m thinking to myself – who wants to be like something else? Who wants to be like something that isn’t oneself?

It’s like when you were little and you pretended not to be you; you wanted to be a princess or a fairy or something like that. Translate that into real life – you go out and spend so much time trying to fit in and be like all the other people – whether it’s tv celebs, internet celebs, or your amazing hairdresser.

Why do we spend so much money and effort to make ourselves something we’re not? Why the status bag? Why the Juicy tracksuits (hey, maybe you really ARE into that…)? Why emulate others’ style of dress? Why the aversion to tattoos on your face? Where is the cultivation of individuality? Those people who are impressionable to buy this and that because it’s what their *idol* wears/carries/supports/advertises aren’t cultivating their real self. They don’t develop their persona… they cultivate something false, that mimics others. They parrot life – and how can you experience the real beauty of life, if you’re simply parroting looks, ideas, and lifestyles?

I want to plead with people: “Be original! Don’t try so hard to be like that person! Do what you do because it’s an expression of you!!! Don’t follow, blindly, stuffing your life with material things without knowing why you want those things, and/or hold them dear in the first place! THINK FOR YOURSELF!”

The beauty of the people we idolize is that they have a certain flair – a flair they’ve personally developed to be the awesome people they are. The beauty of watching those people move through this magnificent world is that those people are living for a world in and of themselves. They broke through barriers to express their inner person … but that person is not you. The only thing you can do is be inspired by those idols to express yourself so that your world reflects each facet of who you are and aspire to be.

It’s sad to watch all these people follow an ideal to blindly become something they don’t know. The sorrow lies in the fact that you only see one side of the die. You are presented this awesome ONE, but on one side there’s a three and on another side there’s a six and to emulate only ONE side of that die leaves the rest of you incomplete.

Stop emulating. Start casting your own die.

Turn yourself off from everything you know, spend a little time alone, and cultivate what grows inside. It’s fucking magic, I tell you. And it’s the most satisfying thing you could do for you.
