Easy Hair

I have to post about this because in the past 4 hours I’ve had my hair up, I’ve had at least 3 comments on it. It happens every time I do it and it looks amazing. Funny enough, I got this tip out of a Seventeen mag in the early 90′s when I had extra long hair. The best part of the ‘do is that when my hair is dirty, it stays up easier. It looks better. I wash it less. Sounds gross, but with colored hair, everyday washes are not an option. The best part is, I used to do this to my hair for proms, formals, whatnot when I wanted my hair up, and I’d leave some little tendrils down and barrel-curl them and it looks amazing. It looks amazing if it’s neat and tidy. It looks amazing if it’s messy and spiky.

It’s easiest to put it up when its dampened a little. I’m including a pictorial review for your amusement. I’d buy a nice box of U-pins or a big package of bobby pins that are approximately the same color as your hair. If you want to be all fancy or something, you can use U-pins like this (not my style really, but whatever):

1. Part hair, comb flat. Sometimes it helps to use a little pomade/product/whatever. I don’t – you might if your hair isn’t slightly dirty or wet. I have a fringe, so I leave it out. If you look good with all your hair pulled back, try it, or leave a bit out where your fringe should be, and at the end, pull it down, across your forehead and behind your ear and secure with a bobby pin for a very sleek look. Experiment a little and if it looks funny, you can always pin it back in later.

2. Take a section next to the part from your forehead to your crown, pull back ponytail style, and twist. Keep twisting till it makes a little knot. Don’t get too much hair in there – think like corn rows or something. Too much hair is hard to pin, and makes it chunky – your pins are going to try to escape later. I usually wind it around my finger 3 or 4 times. Secure with U-pins or bobby pins. It’s definitely easier to pin these around your crown. You can try pinning them lower, if you want.

Cross the pins like this for maximum hold!

3. Take a section mirroring that on the other side of the part. Pull this back ponytail style and twist. Wind it whichever way you want and pin. Bonus points if these are a little messy. It’ll look awesome and if it’s weird, you can pin them down later.

These spiky bits look good!

4. Take the next section down on your head – imagine your head as rows and you’re just taking rows of hair, twisting them and pinning them. I usually do 4 rows on each side of my head. Like I said, don’t do them too small, or they’re hard to pin at the back. If you have longer hair, you may have to use more pins, or smaller rows. Extra points if you leave tendrils hanging here or there – that can look very messy and awesome.

5. Now you’re at the back of your head. I usually do this in 4 sections. Make a + split and twist these and pin them up by the mound of twists you’ve already got. do that with all four sections. If you’ve got any twists that are bulgy, pin farther up on the twist. Take bobby pins and make x shapes over the bulgy spots, while pulling the hair back towards the twists (to make it look flat). I secure all the bottoms of these back twists that way, because they’re the most likely to try to escape.

Finish by patting down, spraying down, wetting down any cowlicks and frizzies. I lightly spray mine and pat it down so it’ll stay. If your hair isn’t dirty/wet this is a good idea. Once this is done, I go back and add decorative clips, or jewels or feathery bits or whatever. Sometimes I pin down the spiky stuff that sticks out and sometimes I pull out little spiky bits so it looks more punky.

The hair seriously takes me 10 minutes and it would take me longer to blow dry and flatten. It’s super easy and looks great when my hair is dirty or wet.

Try it out, chickies! Let me know how it works. :D

What a fun, easy look! Might have to give this a whirl in place of my boring old ponytail.

I also do this to my hair a lot. And it does look so chic and like you put a lot of effort into it.

  3. I used to style my hair like this all the time, and no one ever believed how easy it was. My hair was shorter then, and I didn’t think I could get it all up once it was longer, but now I think I’m going to have to try.

@ Jen – Your hair isn’t too much longer than mine… and if you do it in smaller twists and leave the ends out, I’ll bet it looks amazing!

  5. I used to wear my hair like that as well :) When it was shorter. It’s a bit too long right now to do that, so I do a twist and a braiding with the twisted hair pieces.

    I think it looks incredible!!!

Fabulously Broke’s last blog post..There is such a thing as being too frugal
