Every so often, I see someone with beautiful thick-gauge earrings that makes me pause and think, “I wonder if I could get away with stretching my ears“. I’ve got a normal post size (18ga?) that has been stretched over time by countless dangly earrings – so much that I could probably get a 16 post in with little worry.
I really covet the look of gauged jewelery. Â See, I want the look of the funky horn and wood spirals, but I want the versatility of being able to wear normal hoops as well, without having to keep spacers in.
I was alerted to this Etsy seller recently by a couple friends who know how much I covet the look of gauged jewelery and this shop definitely has what I want – Gauged-look jewelery on normal sized posts. Say “Hello” to Carpedraco (aka LumenVito). Of her designs, Temika from Carpedraco says:
“I personally can’t wear much metal and have admired gauge organic jewelry from afar. I never wanted to stretch my ears so I found a way to carve, sand and drill gauged pieces so I could wear them. And now I bring them to you.”
Many of her pieces are on silver posts so they look gauged, and for the earrings with slide-through posts, her shop offers silver posts.
I was so excited to make this find that I bought a few pair myself!

(Phoenix Rising Horn Earrings)
(Supaa Swirls Bone Earrings)
I’ve found they’re pretty easy to get on after the first try and they look amazing. Exactly what I wanted!!
(Thuggish?? I blame that vest.)
I’ve got the Phoenix Rising earrings in the gold horn, and those Supaa Swirls in white.   The prices are DEFINITELY reasonable – the organic-look is totally chic.  You should definitely check out that shop!

I’m still going back and forth on those earings. How well do the posts stay in? Do you worry about losing them? What’s the weight like?

I do worry a little about losing the balls on the Supaa Swirls … I’m very careful not to put them in over the bathroom sink or anything.
The earrings are both pretty lightweight compared to some I’ve tried. I have a little trouble getting them in at first, but after I do one, the other ear is easy.
I like the silver posts for those horn earrings. I feel like they’re easier to put in than the horn posts and they don’t look funny at all. I’ve recently noticed the posts that come with the earrings are a slightly bigger gauge than normal posts – I would NOT be able to get these into my newer second holes, but because my lower (first) holes are stretched from years of heavier earrings, they do fit.

I loved this look for years before it had the courage to do it. Then I went from an 18g to an 8g in 2 months. I would never go any bigger because the 8g’s do shrink back when I leave then out. Also when I need them I can slip in faux diamond plugs. They look just like a set of studs.

First I just wanted to say thanks for showing off our burl drop spirals. The hit showed up in my site stats. Second, I just wanted to mention that although they’re not currently on our site, we’re working on a new line of jewelry for individuals with standard ear piercings made from natural materials. The first run will be a line of disc style earrings with Titanium posts (the healthiest metal you can wear) that feature both bold exotic hardwoods as well as toned down woods with etched or cut out designs (think lace and damask prints). We’re just working on finishing up the logistics for the more complex stuff. Here’s an example of the bare wood discs in Tiger Ebony and Pink Ivory: http://onetribe.nu/blog/post/62 If you might be interested in these let me know, we’ll send off samples for you to sport
Just shoot us an email.
Those sound awesome! I’m always looking for ways to sport the tribal look, without stretching my ears (though I contemplate stretching!)
