I like to sometimes use a thread analogy, destiny is like a thread in your grasp as you walk through life. If you allow the thread to pass freely you could have an interesting and happy life. If you however pull against your thread you can either snap it or give yourself a nasty hand injury. I'm not sure if it makes any real sense, but I like the phrase "Go with the flow". It's a little like the concept behind Danny Wallace's YES Man (Book not movie).
